Grade 8–12 · Port Shepstone
Science education on the KZN South Coast: inside Wesbury College of Science
Wesbury College of Science is a dedicated science school on the KZN South Coast for learners in Grades 8 to 12. Based in Port Shepstone and part of the Wesbury Schools group, it's close to home for families from Hibberdene, Margate and along the coast.
Science and technology shape the whole school day. Learners explore science through practical work and questions, building confidence as they learn. This gives them a strong foundation for matric maths and science.
Why choose a dedicated science school in KZN?
Science shapes the whole school day
At most schools, science is a period on the timetable. Here, it's a way of thinking that runs through the day.
A teacher who knows their name
Teachers who love the subject, classmates who are curious too, and more than the curriculum requires — so a science-minded child gets room to move.
Close to home — no boarding needed
Families on the South Coast have long sent science-minded children to boarding schools in Durban or Pietermaritzburg. Now there's a dedicated science college in Port Shepstone — so your child keeps their weekends, their friends, and their home-cooked meals.
A group pathway from Grade RR to Grade 12
Wesbury College of Science is part of the Wesbury Schools group — a school community that stretches from Grade RR to Grade 12, with a place here from Grade 8 all the way to Matric.

The school's vision is to provide quality science education for all learners admitted and to fully develop the potential of each learner not only scientifically but also socially and economically in a democratic environment.
Mission
The school's mission is to maintain a standard of achievement such that in teaching and learning it is judged to be one of the premier institutions in KwaZulu-Natal and the Republic of South Africa as a whole.
A day in the life: practicals and projects
Learning through experiments
A lesson might begin with a question on the board and an experiment on the bench. Learners record their results, then explain what they found. Sometimes it works first time. Often it doesn't, so they work out why, make adjustments and try again. These habits help them understand the science and stay useful long after their last exam.
Picture a Grade 9 class testing water samples on an ordinary Tuesday. They compare measurements and argue, politely, about what the numbers mean.
Practicals and projects
From Grade 8, learners practise planning investigations and working safely. They learn to record results honestly and explain their findings in their own words, preparing them for NSC practicals.
Projects give them time to develop a question, test it through an experiment and reach a conclusion, with a teacher guiding them along the way.
Where it leads: your stream, your results, your future
Your stream: choosing in Grade 10
The college's promise is that every kind of learner has a route through — which is why Grade 10 learners choose a named stream:
| Stream | Subjects | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Science | Mathematics · Physical Science · Agricultural Sciences · Life Sciences · Life Orientation | Learners heading to medicine, engineering and BSc fields — Maths plus Physical Science is the university gateway |
| General Science | Business Studies · Life Sciences · Life Orientation · Economics · Mathematical Literacy | Learners who want science to stay alive, with a commerce and real-world maths mix |
| Business Science | Business Studies · Life Orientation · Accounting · Agricultural Sciences or Geography · Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy | The flexible commerce stream — entrepreneurship-minded learners, with choices built in |
All three streams carry the same fee — the choice costs nothing extra.
Your results, published openly
We believe parents deserve real numbers, so here's the full three-year picture for our matric learners:
| Year | Pass rate | Wrote | Passed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 NSC | 82.6% | 23 | 19 |
| 2024 NSC | 82.8% | 29 | 24 |
| 2023 NSC | 81.8% | 33 | 27 |
We publish these figures with the numbers behind them — because a percentage on its own tells you less than the honest picture.
Your future: career pathways
A strong science foundation opens doors: medicine and health sciences, engineering, data and technology, agricultural science, teaching, skilled trades — and the confidence to keep learning whatever comes.
The matric years and beyond
In Grades 10–12, the focus shifts to depth: mastering content, practising past papers, and walking into the National Senior Certificate exams prepared. The college also runs a Grade 12 Upgrader programme for learners rewriting NSC subjects part-time — R600 per subject per month — because a matric result should never be the end of the road.

Is Wesbury the right science school for my child?
Even if your child isn't sure about science yet — that's normal. Plenty of learners arrive in Grade 8 uncertain and discover the subject in a practical lesson, with a teacher who knows their name. The science focus strengthens every learner's foundation; the ones who fall in love with it find their path early.
